The Millennium Plate Project
The Millennium Plate Project was created by Danny Kostyshin, a potter/ceramic artist in Vancouver, B.C.
The Project was done during the last 6 months of the changeover of the millennium, and into the first year of the new century. It is a concept with which to approach the embellishment of a series of 30 handmade,(wall-hangable) porcelain bowls.
The Millennium Plate Project also contains the contributions of some participating artists, local and international.
For those plates that I created- I took my inspiration from the news, and world events that happened during this time period. Such issues as "World Aids Day Without Art..", "Earth Day", "IMAGINE MILLENNIUM", "International Noise Awareness Day", "Dec.31 1999", and "The Passing Of George Harrison", are some of the events, that define this period, and are reflected in the spirit of the MPP.. "War is over - Millennium"- is a reference to John and Yoko, a concept/idea they pursued, in the interest of art, that has relevance, still today. The plate "WAR IS OVER,WE GAVE PEACE A CHANCE" is my updated response for the 21st century. Other works, of mine, in this project, contain references to the environment - all issues and concerns from the last century, that are on the forefront of social and political concern, to the world, in this century.
The participating artists who contributed to The Millennium Plate Project, came to my studio, took up brush and ceramic oxide coloured slip to work directly on the hand made plates.
International Fluxus artist Francesco Conz (DICK HIGGINS LOVED CANADA), Michael Morris"(PLANET ICEBERG)", Vincent Trasov (Mr. Peanut-Freundeutsch/Kanadische) , photographer Bryan Lynch (Bryan's Bowl), all added their ideas to the plate project. Ceramic artist Sally Michener"(MY LIFE)" as well as painters Gwen Curry (A Bird in the bush..) and Attila Lukacs,(POSTERIORARITY),(FULL MOON MILLENNIUM) are some of the other artists who contributed to this project. One of Attila Lukacs's contributions to the Millennium Plate Project (BLUE HAND), is featured in Paul Mathieu's book called "SEXPOTS".
